Gender inequality is inhibiting southern Africa from realizing its full potential as the majority of women are not part of development initiatives. According to the African Human Development Report, sub-Saharan Africa lost an estimated US$2.5 trillion in 2018 due to gender inequality, a figure which rose from US$105 billion in 2014. The lack of legal frameworks that adequately address gender concerns in new and emerging development issues remains one of the major obstacles in advancing gender equality.
